The Goal of the project is to improve the management of chemicals in participating countries. This aligns to the GEF goal in chemicals management which is “to promote the sound management of chemicals throughout their life-cycle in ways that lead to the minimization of significant adverse effects on human health and the global environment.”
The Objective of the project is to strengthen and build the capacity required in participating countries to implement their Stockholm Convention NIPs in a sustainable, effective and comprehensive manner, while building upon and contributing to strengthening a country's foundational capacities for the sound management of chemicals.
Though ultimately this project aims to achieve improved legislative and regulatory mechanisms in participating countries, and more effective enforcement, it is in essence a capacity building project. Capacity will be forged within national governments and provincial governments as well as NGO and civil society groups that are involved in the management of chemicals, or are impacted by chemical use, including POPs.
